About Asbury Services, Inc.
Asbury Services, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that serves as the supporting parent organization for seven 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organizations.

Asbury Methodist Village, Inc., and Asbury-Solomons, Inc., are continuing care retirement communities (CCRC) that deliver housing and healthcare services to seniors. Asbury Foundations, Inc., is the fund-raising arm of Asbury and supports Asbury Methodist Village and Asbury-Solomons. In addition, Asbury operates Inverness Village in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Reeders Memorial Home of Boonsboro, Maryland, and two additional facilities in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Residents' ID Badge Cashless System

Residents at Asbury Methodist Village, Solomons, and Inverness now have a convenient ID badge cashless account system for all their dining purchases, gift-store selections, beauty-salon services, and door-access use. In March 2002, Asbury installed the CBORD® Odyssey PCS™ cashless system. The cashless system allows residents to use their ID card to pay for dining services such as à la carte dinner meals in the main dining room, Sunday brunch, à la carte Grill meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, catering charges, party platters, grocery items from the Grill, and guest meal programs.

Management at Asbury wanted to provide maximum flexibility in dining options, provide equity and value in menu offerings and their associated charges, and reduce meal program–related costs of accounting time. By installing the Odyssey PCS system, they were able to do just that. In addition, the new cashless system allowed for

  • Automated resident billing
  • Increased sales volumes
  • Reduced cash transactions

Asbury residents make their own dining choices based on a monthly balance carried in their account. This is very similar to dining programs on many college campuses; residents at this retirement community can decide between more frequent, yet lower-cost meals, or fewer meals featuring premium selections. Their transactions are registered electronically, and the remaining balance is carried over for future transactions. In addition, each time a transaction is made, a receipt is issued showing the cost of the transaction and the remaining balance on the account, allowing residents to track their purchases.

Asbury management felt another important aspect of the system was adding the capability to perform social accounting electronically. This gives staff the ability to notice if meal habits have changed; if other transactions have dropped off suddenly, it might indicate a possible health concern for a resident.

Cashless System Increased Sales for Asbury

Asbury Management revealed that since installing the cashless system, sales have significantly increased. In The Grill at Asbury Solomons, for example, sales increased from $100 a day in July 2002 to over $900 a day by October 2002.
